A holiday in Spain is always a real treat. Go,spoil youself with sun, wine, great food particularly the exuberant variety of Mediterranean fish. Smells, sounds, colours, excitement: that's Spain. But you can add a whole new layer of pleasure and fulfillment to your Spanish holiday by combining it with a Spanish Course.
Standard Spanish school formula
The standard formula would be built around 4 hours class in the morning and group activities available for the rest of the day. Or, of course, you can head off and go snorkling, bungie-jumping or whatever you normally like to do on holiday.
Needless, to say, this standard package can be varied infinitely - we talk about this later.
Let us look at the advantages of going to Spain to learn Spanish
From the minute you arrive, you are totally immersed in the Spanish world, absorbing, soaking up sounds and expressions painlessly.
Homestay: a formula for integration in, and learning about Spain
You find yourself dropped into a small group of fellow travellers, learners of Spanish from all over the world; all brought together with a similar positive mind-set to yourself. No sitting on the outskirts, isolated in a tourist trap for you.
Normally, you are experiencing the enrichment, the challenge of homestay; being integrated into a `real' Spanish family. I always think this is a terrific privelege. Yea, I know: you are paying for your board, but still, doesn't this beat the anonymity and impersonalness of big multinational hotels hands-down.Yea, I know it can be a culture shock: strange food; strange folk and a strange life-style. But, you are an adventurous type. You
are here simply because you want to extend your horizons.
You're here partly because you are bored sideways with the package tours, the school reunions etc. You are ready for something new, exciting. Culture, literature, wines, danse, snorkling, diving: it is difficult to imagine anything this pleasure loving world will not supply with gusto and a laugh.
And all the time, you are learning Spanish,
making new friends, seeing a whole new side of life.
Your fellow students: multi lingual; multi national
Students in the schools we know come in all shapes, sizes and from all backgrounds. In one group last year, for example, ages went from age 17 to 83. They came from more than 60 different countries. 30% of that bunch had no knowledge of Spanish before they came.
So, I think you will fit in alright, regardless of age or background!
95% of students came on their own
Interestingly, in the group surveyed, a whole 95% came on their own. This surprized me - though the pattern seems fairly gereral. I thought more would have partners / children golfing/ lying on sun-drenched beaches on hand. But, this was not so. People coming to Spain to learn Spanish obviously are also coming to really integrate themselves in the culture, the lifestyle of Spain.
This is wise. They are giving themselves every chance of
really learning the language, of making great progress.
They are also giving themselves every chance of making new friends in this mini-global community of kindred spirits.Spanish schools, building on long experience, are well attuned to all this characteristics of the langauge learner in Spain. Most for example organise a welcoming supper on the night you arrive, just so that people can meet, start inter-relating immediately.
So, if you are thinking of coming on your own to learn Spanish in Spain, you are making a wise decision.
Thinking of travelling in Europe on your
own?
Indeed, if you are thinking of travelling in Europe on your own, a few weeks in a Spanish language school, might be a wise course at the beginning while you get your bearings, get used to travel. And new friends, fellow spirits you meet along the way are the highlight
of such travel.
Word of warning
Just a little word of warning though: your multi-lingual
fellow-students will tend to quickly discover English as the common language: try to discourage this! You are here to learn, to practice Spanish.
